Ugni molinae, the Chilean guava, also called ugni or murtilla, is a bushy shrub that can reach 1.50m to 1.80m in all directions. This plant, native to Chile, Argentina and Bolivia, has small evergreen leaves, a white-pink bloom, as well as small, highly appreciated edible fruits.
The Chilean guava tree is moderately resistant to cold, but it is estimated that it will still withstand brief frosts of around -12°C, or even slightly lower in very brief dry cold conditions.
The foliage of the Chilean guava tree is quite fine, with small evergreen oval bronze-green leaves, about 3cm long at most and about 1cm wide.
The flowering of this plant is spring, white-pink in color. The flowers are self-fertile.
Chilean guavas are small berries 6mm to 1cm in diameter, red in color, and with a very pronounced strawberry flavor.
