Its stiff leaves grow in tight rosettes. They are partially covered with silvery-white scales arranged in narrow longitudinal bands. The leaves are grey, shiny, stiff and arched and their edges are bristling with thorns. Exposed to the sun, the leaves take on a rich metallic bronze color.
This plant lives for many years and multiplies very easily by suckers.
In spring, bell-shaped flowers are born on long stalks that grow beside, not in the center of the rosette of mature leaves. This feature allows the plant not to die after flowering, unlike some other bromeliads.
Dyckia fosteriana gives flowers 2.5 cm in diameter. They are carried by flower stalks 25 to 30 cm high, which places them well above the leaves. The flowers are yellow or orange and campanulate in shape.
Dyckias are popular as houseplants because they are slow growing and spread about 30 cm, but can be grown outdoors in areas with mild winters (USDA zones 9 or 10)
