The fruits are 5 cm obconical dehiscent capsules lined inside with dense spiny star-like hairs. They have type 5 radiate symmetry like starfish and they have obvious ornamental interest (see photos)
In East Africa and Asia its fibers are used to make ropes, fishing nets and hammocks.
Abroma augusta is commonly used in traditional medicine in India, Bangladesh and other Asian countries, especially to treat menstruation disorders
