This species is deciduous in our latitudes, it loses its leaves at -1°C, and becomes bald at the time of flowering.
The flowers are solitary and measure 10 to 12 cm in diameter. They are pink to red in color, with a white heart spotted with brown in the center. They are composed of 5 stellate petals on a long-styled staminal tube and grow in the leaf axils in early fall.
The fruits are pyriform, green, hanging, similar to avocados and can measure up to 20 cm long. As they ripen, they surround themselves with a brown parchment envelope containing seeds (peas) protected by white silky fibers which gave the tree its Anglo-Saxon name. (Silk floss tree)
