Note that the plant contains toxic alkaloids and that these roots were used by the Indians as an aphrodisiac.
The leaves are alternate, simple, oblong to lanceolate, acuminate, irregularly toothed, 5-15 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, often tinted purple.
Flowering in terminal clusters 30 cm long, bright red, from July to September. The flowers are tubular, with 2 lips cut into 5 lobes. (2 small ones pointing up and 3 large ones, fanned out pointing down).
