Victoria amazonica is the largest aquatic plant in the world. It was observed for the first time in 1801 on the Rio Mamore, a tributary of the Amazon, by the naturalist and botanist Taddeus Haenke during an expedition to Peru and Bolivia.
This giant plant is native to the residual flooded areas after the flooding of the Amazon, in this environment the Amazonian victoria quickly becomes a dominant species. However, despite its very wide geographical distribution (Guyana, Brazil and Bolivia), this annual plant remains relatively rare in nature.
