It was introduced in France in 1711
Magnolia grandiflora becomes a tree 20-25 m high, or even more for certain exceptional specimens.
Its port is pyramidal and widens very strongly with time. Its trunk is straight, often branched to the base.
The bark is smooth, grayish and has many medicinal properties. The twigs are pubescent and rust-colored.
Its longevity varies between 150 and 200 years.
It is regularly employed as an avenue tree. It supports pruning and its wood is used in carpentry.
Leaves are evergreen, alternate, simple, petiolate 2-2.5 cm, shiny green above, rusty below when young, leathery, elliptical to oblong, wavy at edges, up to 25 cm long and broad about 10 cm.
The fragrant flowers are terminal, the stamens are yellow. They reach 25-30 cm in diameter. The flower buds are protected by pubescent scales. Flowering extends from June to September.
The fruits of Magnolia grandiflora are erect, 5-10 cm long, cone-shaped consisting of follicles, green-purple with a red peduncle.
