Passiflora incarnata is a passionflower native to North America, and is particularly common in the southeastern United States. This vine is called "Maypop" because it tends to freeze to the ground during winters and reappear in May. It is a very interesting passion flower for the lover of exotic plants, because it is not only very resistant to certain cold (dry) conditions, and moreover it offers decorative flowers and edible fruits appreciated.
It is a very herbaceous passionflower, which has evergreen leaves in hot climates (10a and above), but which will be entirely defoliated and whose vegetation will be destroyed by the first frosts in cooler climates, to reappear at the beginning May (hence its name MAYPOP). The leaf is broadly trilobed, and measures up to 15cm wide.
The flowers are very decorative and fragrant, quite variable in appearance and color, generally ranging from white to mauve, and measuring up to 9cm. Flowering takes place from summer until frost.
The fruits of the maypop are about 6cm long, and are yellow-green. They are edible and appreciated, although rarely marketed. They are eaten fresh or processed.
