Opuntia microdasys is native to central and northern Mexico
It forms bushes 40 to 60 cm high, sometimes up to 1 meter. With cladodes (rackets) from 6 to 15 cm long and 4 to 12 cm wide.
Opuntia microdasys does not have thorns, but tufts of glochids 4 to 5 mm long which are easily detached and can remain stuck in the skin, hence the need for precautions when handling the plant.
